countdown to city designer turned country farmer

As many of you now know, I have decided to take an internship opportunity on an organic ranch in Colorado. This probably comes as a shock to most, as I have a terrific job in downtown Chicago, designing for one of the top financial firms. But it's because of that job's many perks that I'm able to take a sabbatical for the summer and give back to the earth by organic farming!

Having been born on a family farm, and having farmers and gardners on both sides of the family, I guess I've got gardening in my blood. [And after watching the movie Dirt! http://www.dirtthemovie.org/ a few weeks ago, we all have gardening...or at least dirt in our blood. That's where all our food comes to life after all, right?]

After container gardening on decks for the past couple years, I'm more than ready to plant stuff in the actual ground...and grow something other than an infestion of aphids :) So stay tuned...I will do my best to keep this updated with what I'm doing and what I'm learning. Hopefully this can be a little inspiration to eat local, grow your own garden, think about healthy food, or just get outside! I'm getting hungry already...

And if you're looking for summer reading, I'd highly suggest anything by Michael Pollan. Particularly The Omnivore's Dilemma which really got me thinking about organic farming. Or if you're more the movie type, try Food Inc. http://www.foodincmovie.com/
